Tarifa is the wind capital and we have been riding it for over 20 years. Levante, Poniente, spots and best season: what you need to know before kitesurfing here. You’ll Never Ride Alone.
Tarifa has something hard to find in a single place: wind, sea and a sports culture that’s part of daily life. That’s why, for much of the year, riders arrive from all over to ride, learn and enjoy the local vibe.
For first-time visitors, kitesurfing in Tarifa isn’t just about entering the water. Understanding the environment, knowing the characteristics of the area and choosing the right moment for each session also matter.
At Subcielo we’ve spent years riding and teaching here. That local experience lets us guide every student according to their level and help them enjoy Tarifa beyond a simple kitesurf lesson.
Tarifa isn’t just a place to kitesurf. It’s a destination where the wind is part of everyday life.
Tarifa is known for its two prevailing winds: Levante and Poniente. Each has different characteristics and can significantly change the riding experience.
The Levante arrives from the east and can reach high intensity. The Poniente, coming from the west, behaves differently and is closely tied to the conditions of the Strait and the Atlantic.
To kitesurf in Tarifa it’s not enough to know there’s wind. You need to weigh which wind is blowing, its strength, the direction, the sea state and each rider’s level before deciding where and when to ride.
At Subcielo we check the conditions before every session and adapt the activity to the day’s real situation. If you’re planning your trip, checking the forecast is a good starting point to understand how the wind may behave during your stay.
Want to know the wind forecast for the coming days?
Tarifa has different beaches and areas where you can kitesurf, and choosing one or another depends on much more than distance. The day’s wind, the sea state and your riding level are factors that can make one spot more suitable than another.
If you’re coming to Tarifa for the first time, knowing the characteristics of each area will help you plan your sessions better and understand why local riders don’t always choose the same place.
At Subcielo we know Tarifa’s beaches and their different conditions after years of riding and teaching in the area. If you’re planning your trip, you can check our guide to kitesurf beaches and spots in Tarifa to get to know the different areas and their characteristics.

Tarifa has wind all year round, but each season has its own character:
Many riders’ favourite seasons: frequent wind, mild temperatures and beaches with room to spare. Ideal for intensive courses.
Constant thermals and levantes, warmer water and the vibe at its peak. It’s wise to book ahead and factor in the marked swimming areas.
Atlantic fronts bring very usable ponientes. With a good wetsuit you can ride perfectly and the spots are almost empty.

The short, safe path is a course with a certified instructor: kite control, safety, waterstart and first rides, step by step. Check the kitesurfing levels to see where you’re starting from and compare the options in our kitesurf courses in Tarifa.
If you already ride independently, you can go straight to equipment rental or to some private lessons to refine technique or open up a new discipline.
The Strait of Gibraltar acts as a funnel between two seas and two continents: the wind accelerates as it passes through. That’s why Tarifa racks up more rideable days than almost any other destination in Europe.
To achieve your first rides, most students need between 3 and 5 days of lessons. The exact progression depends on your fitness, the wind conditions and your hours on the water.
With proper training, modern equipment and good judgement in choosing conditions, it’s a very safe sport. Most scares come from learning on your own or riding in unsuitable conditions.
We work with accommodation in Tarifa close to the spots, for every budget. And if you have a windless day to spare, here’s what to do in Tarifa.
If you’re thinking of coming to Tarifa and want to make the most of your stay to learn or improve your kitesurfing, at Subcielo we can help you choose the best option for your level, your dates and the course format that suits you.
